October Wasp

October Wasp

Kirk M. Klasson

October wasp

that hangs and drops

in the hour before the shadows fall

searching the deserted eaves

where summer once reclined

faithfully examining familiar imperfections

tucked within the clapboard walls

puzzled by the crooked light

your guarded haunts lie still

and leaves like reckless children play

in your empty yards

and in the stillness and decay

that the afternoon assembles

a fragrant chill begins to bloom

and with it grows the darkness

that consumes your faithful vigil

as it does the dying day
